The House of Grief
Regarding this tragic event I tried to design a transparent monument that can represent a modern chapel containing different elements like columns, frames, colored glasses and a water space, each of them representing a very important symbol in the humanity's culture. Also, I tried to highlight the relationship between the soul, the body and the ascendancy of grief and misery to make the people feel a sense of peace, compassion and spirituality that can be seen with the same meaning in the churches. Therefore, for an abstract design in this content I used all these elements together to create a certain feeling that will attenuate the people’s pain and will make the memory of this tragic event to be seen with less sufferance.
The position of this monument wants to accentuate the relationship between the axis of the church buildings and the monument as a symbol of transition from the physical world into the spiritual one, through the journey of life.
I used the water space during the design as a symbol of purity and life to create a sense of peace in the surrounding environment that have a trickle - down effect in the center (which also has the same axis like the church) and is based on negative levels in the overall level of water space. This thing causes the water spill in order to make it cover the sound of phonic pollution resulting from the surrounding environment that would divert the memorial mind of visitors.
The 64 columns designed in the Commemorative monument have become a symbol of the 64 victims of this sad incident. The columns support the latticed structure and they are also arranged in the water space and around the central negative volume as parallel together representing a symbol of communication and a way of passing through the material world to the latticed frames that represent the sky and the spirituality. The frames connect to each other and also with the columns, representing through the little colored squares the pictures of the 64 victims of this tragedy which are also connected.
The metal frames are decorated with colored glass to make the sunlight play a game of colors through them and to take the visitors to another world.
The central level design in line with the axis of the church, which is surrounded by a frame represents a conceptual and spiritual content that can be remembered. This level has two cross sections perpendicular on each other and in this way the concept is legible to the visitors. The negative space in the center of the crusaders led light on the fountain on the cross and is the central negative volume that expresses the concept of truth.
The colored glasses that are in the reticular frames and that contain the colors of the Romanian flag with their complementary colors are in the line to make effective and spiritual spaces to the monument. The colored glasses are very important because they have a holy history, being used also in the churches or cathedrals.
As a conclusion, I will summarize my idea as being a way to make the people involved in this tragic event to remember the victims with less pain and to communicate with them not in a sad place like a cemetery but in this new monument that represents their entire life and their journey from the material world to the spiritual one.
