Cy Twombly is dead.

A former cryptologist in the American army.

A great painter.

A great painter.

A great painter.

When the Art World moved its epicenter (real, or imagined) to New York, Cy Twombly moved to Rome.

This required vision and courage.

And perhaps there is no accident that this great painter functioned, we are told, as a cryptologist in the army… What is cryptology…? The science of enciphering and deciphering secret codes and messages…

Isn’t there a relationship between this function of his youth and his art…?

What else are Twombly’s paintings if not an unending enciphering / deciphering of the mysteries of life…?

And what else is an artist supposed to do…?

As Paul Klee once said, the artist does not render the visible, but MAKES VISIBLE what most of us do not see.

This is exactly what Twombly, and any good artist, does.

We lost a great artist, one that preferred (in opposition, again, to the trend of the day) to remain modest.

Modesty often deserts artists… but it didn’t in this case.

And indeed, how could a cryptologist be arrogant, one that is continuously confronted with the limits of knowledge, one who is endlessly confronted with what is hidden and what is difficult…?!?

And a cryptologist, like Twombly, with a great and deep appreciation of the “classical” can only double these difficulties.

Please send us ANY work, ANY size and ANY format that responds to the theme. To pay homage to this artist is to pay homage to the hidden truths of life, of which, these disinterested “cryptologists” true artists are do not cease to attempt to open up, without frivolity, but with a deeply seated reverence…

It would be beautiful if our houses, again, would have inscriptions that could be described as cryptic, just as in Cy Twombly’s paintings… incisions of the unknown, wrinkles of time, wrinkles of memory…

It is with great emotion that we ask you to celebrate this truly great artist, with a house worthy of him.

There is a registration fee of 20 Euros payable through the registration section of our website, www.icarch.us. The registration deadline is September 21^st, 2011. The deadline to submit your work is December 31^st, 2011. We will display all the works received on our website and we will also organize an exhibition that will open on April 25^th, 2012, at The Gallery of Contemporary Art in Sibiu, Romania, on which occasion we will also publish a book with all the works received. We also plan to have the exhibition travel, since we believe the meanings of Twombly’s art require a dissemination as wide as possible.
