HOUSE FOR LEO TOLSTOY

 

 

One hundred years ago Leo Tolstoy died. When he died a whole country, a huge country, mourned. And not only Russia, but the whole world!

 

This was 100 years ago.

 

We doubt the death of a writer, today, would have a similar impact.

 

Not in Russia, and certainly not anywhere else in this world, today.

 

We read that Tolstoy, when he left home, just a few days before he died, he had with him three books, one of which was Dostoevsky’s “The Brothers Karamazov.”

 

Imagine a great, great writer, like Tolstoy, still wishing to learn, at 82!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

 

Isn’t it beautiful…????????????????????????????????

 

How many writers, at any age, today, would do something similar…?????????????????

 

And how many counts of this world, real or fake, would be willing to once a week repair shoes for the poor, in a shoemaker’s shop, as he did…???????????? And how many would read, and learn, from Schopenhauer’s great appeal to poverty, as a road to salvation, as Count Tolstoy did…???????

 

Tolstoy is still alive, very much so, 100 years after his death!

 

If anyone would doubt it, even upon reading his great novels, we recommend a truly great biography: Tolstoy, by Henri Troyat.

 

In an age in which, even in China, was proclaimed that to get rich is glorious, Count Tolstoy chose a different road. Born immensely rich, he gradually distanced himself from these riches, to the point he died in a railroad station, with three books in his luggage.

 

Admirable dedication to life, to the art of writing, and to spirituality!
